Potential biases in inferring Holocene temperature trends from long-term borehole information

چکیده
[1] We use a set of global coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation (OAGCM) experiments for timeslices over the Holocene from 9K Yr BP onwards to examine differences in Northern Hemisphere Ground Surface Temperature (GST) and Surface Air Temperature (SAT) trends. The model results are driven mainly by the orbitallyforced changes in seasonal insolation, and in particular, the increase in northern hemisphere seasonality in the earlyto-mid Holocene. The model reproduces qualitatively presumed past trends in NH temperatures, though it may underestimate their magnitude. For this period, we see on average a significant increase in GST relative to SAT as a result of a competition between the effects of changing seasonal insolation, and the varying extent of insulating seasonal snow cover. The model shows a mid-Holocene peak in annual mean terrestrial Northern Hemisphere GST, but not in annual Surface Air Temperatures (SAT). We conclude that the factors influencing long-term GST trends are potentially quite complex, and that considerable care must be taken in interpreting SAT changes from the GST evidence when there is the possibility of substantial seasonal variation in warmth and snow cover. Deriving century-long trends of surface temperature change from borehole temperatures
We have employed a few-parameter estimation (FPE) technique to derive information on past surface temperature variations from present-day borehole temperatures. Synthetic experiments show that the FPE t•hnique can separate reasonably well information on century-long trends of surface temperature change from borehole temperatures within a .wide range of noise levels. The technique also allows a ...
متن کاملA late Quaternary climate reconstruction based on borehole heat flux data, borehole temperature data, and the instrumental record
[1] We present a suite of new 20,000 year reconstructions that integrate three types of geothermal information: a global database of terrestrial heat flux measurements, another database of temperature versus depth observations, and the 20th century instrumental record of temperature, all referenced to the 1961–1990 mean of the instrumental record. These reconstructions show the warming from the...
متن کاملAnalysis of hydroclimatic trends in the Atrak River basin, North Khorasan, Iran (1975 – 2008)
Hydrologic regime is highly dependent on climate change, as hydrologic cycle components are directly influenced by climatic conditions. This paper analyzes the impacts of climate change on the hydrologic regime of the Atrak River basin in the northeast of Iran. It drains to the Caspian Sea. The data collected at 11 hydrometeorological stations were examined to detect trends in hydroclimatologic...
متن کاملApplication of sediment cores in reconstruction of long-term temperature and metal contents at the northern region of the Persian Gulf
Long marine sedimentary cores can be effective in paleo-climate reconstruction. The present research aims at analyzing the temporal variation of temperature as an important climate parameter and also variations in metal concentrations (As, Ba, Cd, Li, Mo, Mg, Mn, Na, Pb, Sr, Zn, Fe, Ca, Al) of two long sedimentary cores at the Persian Gulf back to the Holocene. The obtained results revealed th...
متن کاملHolocene temperature changes in northern Fennoscandia reconstructed from chironomids using Bayesian modelling
The recently developed Bayesian multinomial calibration model, Bummer, was applied to the fossil chironomid assemblages of a lake situated at the present tree-line in northern Fennoscandia to reconstruct patterns in Holocene climates. The results are compared with inferences derived using non-Bayesian weighted averaging partial least-squares regression. The reconstruction exhibits both long-ter...
